Install the CLI
The CLI is the only required piece. Editor plugins are optional companions that read from data the CLI produces.
Install from a release
One-line installers download the right binary, place it on PATH, and run blamely install for you.
macOS
curl -sSL https://blamely.ai/blamely-mac-install.sh | bashLinux
curl -sSL https://blamely.ai/blamely-linux-install.sh | bashWindows (PowerShell)
powershell -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Command "irm https://blamely.ai/blamely-windows-install.ps1 | iex"Each installer is idempotent — safe to re-run for updates or to repair a broken install.
If you’d rather grab the raw archive, every release is on GitHub Releases (blamely_darwin_arm64.tar.gz, blamely_linux_amd64.tar.gz, blamely_windows_amd64.7z, and the matching arm64 / intel builds).
What blamely install does
The command is idempotent — safe to re-run any time, including after you add a new AI tool. It:
- Copies the binary to
~/.blamely/bin/blamely(a stable location independent ofPATH). - Registers the daemon to start at login: launchd on macOS, systemd user unit on Linux, Scheduled Task on Windows.
- Sets
git config --global core.hooksPathto~/.blamely/git-hooks/and installs globalpost-commitandpost-mergehooks. - Detects which AI tools are present and writes the relevant tool-side hook configuration.
- Appends a
PATHentry to your shell rc file (~/.zshrc,~/.bashrc, or equivalent).
After installing a new assistant
Re-run blamely install — Blamely will pick it up.
Verify the install
blamely statusExpected output: daemon running, a list of detected tools, recent activity counts.
blamely doctorRead-only self-check that walks through every piece: binary location, daemon agent, PATH, global hook, per-tool hooks, database file. It tells you what (if anything) needs fixing.
Reload your shell
The PATH change won’t apply to your current shell. Either open a new terminal or run:
source ~/.zshrc # zsh
source ~/.bashrc # bashThe binary is always available at ~/.blamely/bin/blamely even if PATH isn’t set.
Update
Re-run the one-liner for your platform — installers always fetch the latest release and run blamely install to re-register the daemon and refresh hooks. Attribution history is untouched.
